(More customer reviews)This book was pretty phenomenal to me. I'm not a huge reader, and this one was a nonstop page-turner. The main character, Rossamund Bookchild, was the stereotypical wimpy kid. Small, feeble, passive, an orphan, and to top it all off, had a girl's name. Not only does he get picked on by just about everyone in the orphanage, he also can't get a job. Employers come in from all over to hire the orphans for jobs, like navy sailors, leatherworkers, monster hunters, and everything. But not Rossamund. After years of not being wanted by anyone, a mysterious man comes along and hires him as a Lamplighter on the Emperor's Highway; sounds like a dull and boring job for a boy that fantasized all his life of sailing the open ocean. What he doesn't know is that this job is one that will test his strength, courage, ingenuity, and stamina as he lights lamps and extinguishes them; a seemingly menial job, but also fights for his life, because the land of the Highway is infested with bogles and nickers: monsters, to say the least. Big or small, dangerous or friendly, they always pose an unseen threat on the open road. But first, he must get to Headquarters. That is what Book 1 is all about: his journey to High Vesting. I'm not going to give away details, but he starts off on the wrong foot by getting on a small boat with a seemingly nice sailor who turns out to be a master at trickery. He also makes friends with a fulgar, a type of lahzar monster hunter. Lahzars are a breed all their own, surgically augmented with special organs that produce lightning, or can crush anything's...or anyone's...mind. This one's name is Europe. She becomes a huge help to Rossamund's survival, but also becomes a huge burden on him, as she thinks of him as her servant.
All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a good read, and I plan on buying the second book soon.
