Recently, while bumbling around the internet, I came across a review, on a tattoo website, of a book titled "Inked" by Renda Dodge. The description of the book, from the author's website is, "Tori Liddell has struggled through her twenties suffering from undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder. She documents her radical lifestyle changes and shifting identity through the colorful tattoos that cover her body."This was enough to pique my curiosity, and as I read through a few different reviews I moved from passing curiosity to a strong desire to read this book, and I must say that I am very glad that I did.

This book is very well written and it holds your attention from the fist page.I tend to be a fast reader; while stationed in Iraq I would read through a book every day, quickly going through mine and the rest of my friend's offerings.Because of this, I try to ration out my reading time to keep from going through things too fast.Unfortunately, or fortunately I guess, I was not able to do that with "Inked."I sat down with it one Monday night and had gone through half of its 210 pages before I realized that it was one o'clock and that I needed to go to work in the morning. The next night found me staying up again, long after my self imposed cutoff time, finishing around 2 AM.

I was pulled in by the way that Renda Dodge portrays the main character. It is not sentimental at all, and from the first few pages you get the feeling that you are reading about a real individual, not a character out of a novel. The story follows Tori's move home to care for her ailing mother. Many of us have come to expect certain things from stories like this: rocky reunion, building tension, and eventual (and often tearful) reconciliation. This book turns all of these conventions on their head.Tori is a deeply flawed person, who is struggling with destructive forces from both her surrounding and from deep within herself. The way that she attempts to make sense of what is happening around her and within her is what kept me up late into the night, unable to put the book down.

Also, the fact the book has been produced and marketed outside of the traditional publishing industry is quite impressive. Some may have preconceived notions of what a "self published" work will be, but this book is absolutely as good, if not better than many of the offerings on hand from more established publishing firms.I am only recently exploring the world of independent fiction, and I Renda Dodge's book is any indication, this new way of getting your work to the public has unlimited potential for producing great stories and great literature.

I highly recommend this book not only to those interested in supporting a talented, independent writer, but to anyone who enjoys a great, and moving story.
