The Flint family is excited to travel to Bell Hoot for an apparent once-in-a-lifetime vacation, but the details surrounding the trip are sketchy at best, if not a bit mysterious. Nevertheless, Ma and Pa Flint, Granny Delphine, the housekeeper Clockwork Gabby, Bea Flint and her littler brother Theo, the next-door neighbor Phoebe --- and Nails the meerkat, even if he is forbidden --- make sure they are prompt and ready to enjoy some sunshine and relaxation. The vacation, though, doesn't start off well.
The first indication that this would be an unusual trip was in the transportation. Rather than traveling to Bell Hoot by plane, train, or automobile, the Flint family boarded a busmarine, etched with the words Sky Black, Moon Blue, Nine Souls Go Through. Matters take a turn for the worse, however, when they arrive at Bell Hoot minus Theo. Sometime during the underwater trip, Theo was sucked out of the busmarine and lost. He is somewhere on Bell Hoot, inexplicably hidden, and the sole means of communication with him is in the Squeak Jar.
For whatever reason, the only person able to talk with Theo through the Squeak Jar is Bea. She learns that he is indeed on Bell Hoot, though he can't be seen and is not exactly sure where he is anyway. If that wasn't enough family drama, Granny Delphine reveals that Bell Hoot is no travel destination: it is their new home. She brought the Flints here for a reason, and that's just scraping the surface of all that Bell Hoot has to offer.
Finding Theo, though, is the first priority. If losing a brother weren't difficult enough, Bea also has to contend with the other inhabitants of Bell Hoot. Most are friendly, including the Miller family, who let the Flints stay in their home. Others, however, have a hidden agenda in helping to find Theo. The reclusive and secretive Ledbetter clan is as eager to locate Theo --- whom they call the Hidden Boy --- as Bea, although their intentions are far from honest. Then there is Arkadi, a wise old repairman, whose words of advice are both challenging and troubling to Bea.
Just exactly where, or what, is Bell Hoot? What are Granny Delphine's intentions for the Flint family? Why is Theo called the Hidden Boy, and why does the Ledbetter clan want to get their hands on him? And what does Mumbo Jumbo have to do with it all?
Sometimes it is difficult enough to make sense of the world around us, but imagine trying to make sense of a whole new world, one with secrets and hidden treasures. That is what Bea Flint tries to do in THE HIDDEN BOY. It's interesting to read and find out exactly how Bea tries to take control of the chaotic world around her. Although the storyline wraps up nicely in the end, Jon Berkeley adds enough mysterious elements to the story that it feels as though the reader gets only a glimpse of what Bell Hoot has to offer. There are many unanswered questions, some of them deeply perplexing, which makes it difficult to wait for the next book in the Bell Hoot Fables series.
