This was originally published (in 1949) under the tile "Murder's A Must ",one of 10 books published that year by the extraordinarily prolific and versatile Fearn .The new title is the better of the two in my view as it conveys more accurately what the book is about.

Vera Bradmore was born in impoverished circumstances in London's East End but has reinvented herself as Madame Luchaire ,under which name she owns a prosperous dress shop in a thriving part of the city .She is not a pleasant or popular woman and there is no great mourning when she is murdered by an intruder at her apartment ,the killer taking pains to expose her back to read what is tattoed there ,namely the single word MARY.There are supects -Claire ,dismissed by Vera that day for damaging a dress ,and Vera' one time fiancee Derek ,who is being threatened with court actuion for terminating the engagement ,on grounds of her lack of social respectability.

The key is the tattoo .Vera was one of identical triplets -the other sisters also have tattoos and the killer targets them in order to get the full import of the tattoo which are a clue to something the killer badly wants

Leading the police investigation is the methodical DI Hancock and his sidekick Sergeant Grimshaw .

The plot is thin but the pace and verve of the writing keeps it afloat and while a period piece it does repay reading if you like British crime writing and feel like exploring some of its less well trodden paths
